Two Poems

NAUSICAA : RAPPORT

She is many. They are one. He says: I am who I am. His name be No One Captain Nemo memorizes a way one sense of five he counts because they don't count because I don't count he takes me out of himself for I am his Not-I as they are Not-Him he carries their names in his mouth: Persephone's shadow Circe Sirens Calypso and Ino Leucothea: his speech of five goddesses. They are one she is many. Might and silver tongued he calls them, singer wizard of the Great Web of which he holds onto a thread onto the raft as the shuttles weaves back & forth lets himself be told: a way a moving destiny to make it through to not. Get snared by contradictions require perhaps the naked lie and polished monologue the story demands one who says she & says mine says MY STORY: if it is his and many threads are crossed, crisscrossed by one-which they hold he binds them they are the movement the shuttle carries her Nausicaa took in the shipwrecked one clothed him guided him his deep gratitude in tender words into which she had better not fall it is a story for everyone & in it she promises her a place will speak of her then he'll take take what she gives and take off. She will stay: she is who. I are.

DEA EST MACHINA. Who wants to fuck her anyway. Who loves what he cannot kill & can kill what shall not die because it makes you immortal—into stone the goddess: a city of men of order & staying postmortem AS IN LIFE: in name in writing in stone.

Sie ist viele. Sie sind eins. Er sagt: Ich bin der ich bin. Sie sind eins sie ist viele. Mächtig & rede begabt nennt er sie, sängerin wissende vom Großen Gewebe in dem er sich an den faden hält an das schiffchen das hin&her geworfne lässt sich erzählen: ein weg ein bewegtes geschick tes durchkommen sich nicht zu-verheddern verstricken lassen in widersprüche etwa verlangt glatte lügen und geschliffene monologe die geschichte einen der sie & der mein sagt MEINE GESCHICHTE: sie ist sein sind viele fäden gekreuzt, gequert von einem – den sie halten er bindet sie sind eine bewegung das schiffchen trägt sie Naus ikaa nahm den schiffbrüchigen auf hat ihn gekleidet geleitet sein verbindlichster dank aus brüchigen worten in die fällt sie besser nicht sie sind für alle eine geschichte & in der verspricht er ihr einen platz wird sie erzählen so nimmt er was sie gibt zuletzt abschied Sie wird bleiben: sie ist die. Ich ist papier vom anderen beschrieben der stoff aus dem die bibliotheken sind meine abgezognen häute es bleibt ein fleisch ein schorf ein grind die wahrheit des Odysseus HE’S NO BODY er hat das Wort er sagt er ist DIE SCHRIFT Ich ist sein text entleibt & ab geschrieben der haruspex liest seinen sinn aus dem noch warmen opferkörper: das leben auf den toten punkt gebracht setzt sich als linie fort & ab in die unendlichkeit: NUMEN & fluchtpunkt aller flächen im Euklidischen raum vor allen bildern der entfernte seher. TELEVISOR. im obskuren der kamera jenseits der objektive das abwesen & seine kameraden kameramänner zuschauer beim töten die hände fest am apparat das auge im visier das Über leben heisst nichtgesehenwerden Abgeblendet gesichter & absichten hinter einem spiegel reflexsystem geblendet sieht das objekt ein objekt kann sich nicht sehen & was Niemand erwidert hat nichts zu sagen ist nicht wahr zunehmen ALLE KRETER LÜGEN gesagt von einer kreterin – was ändert das? IM Ulyss. GV mit OV »Kirke«. hat seinen spass dabei gehabt & sie aufs kreuz gelegt: agent der götter die er sich geschaffen hat nach seinem bild PROJEKT ATHENA kopfgeburt der macht ein panzer nachtsichtgerät mit frauenkörper-camouflage gefechtskopf Gorgo im träger-system: letaler blickkontakt. DEA EST MACHINA. Und wer will die schon vögeln. Wer liebt ein ding das er nicht töten kann & wer kann töten was nicht sterben soll weil es unsterblich macht – zu stein die göttin: eine stadt der männer ort der ordnung & des bleibens post mortem WIE IM LEBEN: im namen in der schrift im stein.

Barbara Köhler (1959–2021) was a German poet who authored a dozen books. She is regarded as one of the most important voices of German poetry in the past half century.

Monika Cassel is the translator of Portolan by Daniela Danz. The recipient of POETRY Magazine’s 2024 John Frederick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation, she lives in Portland, Oregon.
